MLADÁ BOLESLAV – STATUTORY CITY IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC

Mladá Boleslav is a statutory city located in the Central Bohemia Region, about fifty kilometres to the North-East from the capital city, Prague. It is also a town with rich history and highly developed industry. Its earliest history dates back to the second half of the 10th century, when, under the rule of Boleslav II, Přemyslid settlement Nový Boleslav was established and it survived until the year 1262.

In more than a thousand-year history of the town there were periods of growth and decline. The golden era came in the 16th century, when Mladá Boleslav became one of the most important centres of the Unity of the Brethren in the entire country. This period saw growth of many significant monuments and architectural gems, mainly in the Renaissance style. Presence of the Unity of the Brethren favourably influenced also the system of education and the quality of social life. In 1600, the town freed itself by payment from subjection and was promoted by the emperor Rudolph II to a royal town.

In the 19th century the construction of railway, roads and the construction of the Laurin & Klement factory was very important for further development of the town. They first started with the production of bicycles and motorcycles and in 1905 they manufactured the first Czech car – Voituretta. In 1925 the company merged with ŠKODA plants and today it is an important part of Volkswagen Group. The most popular tourist attraction in Mladá Boleslav is the Škoda Auto Museum and it was the history as well as the present of the car company that contributed to the fame of the town even abroad.

Many past and present famous figures come from Mladá Boleslav. Let´s name, for example, the writer and caricaturist František Gellner, actor Adina Mandlová, gymnast Eva Bosáková, or javelin thrower Jan Železný.
