Norway ruins Slovakian dream of quarterfinals – 07.12.2016

European rivalry came next in Arena Riga. In a tough game Norway overcame Slovakia 4-3 (1-1, 2-2, 1-0).

Slovakia reached the play-offs being second in Group C. They scored 20 goals against Poland, Australia and Denmark. Meanwhile Norway overtook the hosts in Group B by a better goal difference. It was an entertaining game starting 1st period. Early in the 1st Norway opened the score, but only 29 seconds later Martin Sikorjak equalized  with a great strike from a distance. Norway were a little bit better at controlling the ball. Meanwhile, Slovaks created better chances to score their second goal. Norwegian goalkeeper Markus Jelsnes made two definitely superb saves.  

Tricky game continued next in the second period. The Scandinavian team began with a strong powerplay but the Slovaks were lucky to keep their net safe. Norway had an advantage during the 2nd period and they converted it into a goal on 33:36. The Slovaks hit back three minutes later with Martin Grlicky being in front of the net. At the last minute of the 2nd period, both team scored one more goal each and went to a break with 3-3.

A nervous match was underway in the third period. Norway restored one goal lead for the fourth time early in the 3rd. The Norwegians were close to score another one, while the Slovaks waited for their opportunity. In the final part of the match, the Norwegians showed well organized defensive play and that provided them with a 4-3 win. Norway will have one day of rest before the quarterfinal battle against Switzerland. Slovakia is able to play in the classification match for 9th place.
