Sweden is the WFC 2013 champion – 15.12.2013Anna Jakobsson was the name of the game in the final match scoring a hattrick and leading Sweden to a 5-1 victory against Finland. The game was tight until the last minutes when Sweden left the result in no doubt and earned the title of World Champions for the fourth time in a row. Sweden faced a totally different team compared to when they played Finland in the group match. The first period of the match was as tight as a final match of a tournament should be. Both teams pressed hard and left hardly any space for the opponent. Finland had a strong grip on the game, but Sweden had more dangerous scoring opportunities. Jonna Mäkelä made very important saves and it was obvious that goaltending would play a big part in the final result. By the first intermission the score was still 0-0 and Finland really needed to start using their chances because Sweden would only give them so many. Mäkelä had made it very obvious, that she wouldn´t let the ball past her easily but in the second period she was forced to give in a little. Only 30 seconds had been played when Anna Jakobsson passed to Sandra Mattsson, who was free just in front of the net. Seven minutes later, Moa Tschop´s long pass reached Anna Jakobsson, who dribbled the ball pass Mäkelä. Finland had a chance to score on powerplay but it was proving just as inefficient as in the semi-finals. Sweden held their secure 2-0 lead till the last period. In the third period Finland still hung on desperately trying to score but Sweden was stronger and more effective. At 49:43 Mattson´s pass found Jakobsson again who scored 3-0 for Sweden. Finland had yet another chance to score on powerplay and this time it worked as planned when Nina Rantala scored to at last get Finland on the scoreboard. Even though Finland still had time left, they were not able to score, not even with six players. Sweden however did score, first to an open net by Jakobsson, for her third, and finally when Mäkelä couldn´t quite slide in time to make the save, Cassandra Edberg scored and nailed the coffin firmly shut on Finland´s hopes of gold. Sweden earned their 7th WFC gold medal with the final result 5-1. Finland´s team captain Laura Kokko explained after the match: - It was a tough fight. The first period was open all the time but we missed to score our goals there. Compared to the first match against Sweden, we did not change that much, we just believed in our strengths. World champion Head Coach Curt Söderström was absolutely proud of his squad: - Satisfied, that is the right word. We wanted to control the match from the beginning and did not let the Finns make the first goal. Otherwise they would have taken more power out of it. It was our advantage to play that good in the mid-field, so we were able to do fast and successful counter attacks. So in the end we did the easy goals and Finland had to open their defense.
