7.6-7.7.2010 - Floorball taking important steps in Belgium

Belgian Floorball Federation has made good work in developing Floorball in the country. The amount of players incresed a lot last year and the development continued this season. Also the number of teams and especially referees increased this season.

In the end of the season an important milestone was achived when the Belgian Floorball Federation was accepted as the member of the National Olympic Committee.

After the spectacular increase of registered players last season (from 320 to 741 players) the growth continued with a final number of 769  players active in 46 teams across the different leagues (37 teams in 2008-2009). At the annual referee courses 74 referees (+76%) managed to successfully pass the test and obtain a license for the league games.

The introduction of play-off games in the men’s competition, both for the Championship title as for promotion/relegation, was a real success as some quite exhilarating matches were seen. The best 4 teams after the regular season had to face each other to decide about the trophy. The Mighty Devils Aalst (2nd in the regular season) beat last year’s champion and 3rd ranked Tigers Kraainem in the first semi-final with a close 5-4 score.

In the final Mighty Devils Aalst met with FBC Stimulo Denderleeuw who surprisingly defeated the regular season winners Waterloo Lions with an overwhelming 8-1 in the second semi-final. On the 16th of May a full crowded arena witnessed how FBC Stimulo Denderleeuw took home their second Belgian championship, 13 years after the first one, with a 3-1 victory.

In the promotion/relegation matches Juventus Floorball Club managed to extend their stay in division 1 at the cost of division 2 runner-up Black Cobra’s Gent after a 4-3 overtime win. Division 2 winners Tornado Brussels celebrated the promotion to the highest level when beating Union Beynoise 3-2.

Men´s national team in WFC Qualifications, the Men U19 national team will be founded

At the WFCQ on February in Poland the Belgian men´s national team showed that the team had made quite some progress with the coaches Marcus Frisk and Daniel Borg. The red devils defeated Great Britain in the first group game, but had to recognize the superiority of Poland and Denmark in the next games. The strength of both these teams was shown by the fact that they both qualified for the WFC.

In September 2010 activities will be started around a national men´s U19 team under the supervision of coaches Claudio Lombardi and Thierry Verhoeven.
