WFCQ 2016 EUR1: Final Day – 07.02.2016

The final day of the World Floorball Championships Europe 1 Qualification decided the 2nd best team of the group and the remaining WFC 2016 spots.

Slovakia beat Russia and earned a ticket to the WFC 2016 Final Round. As the goal difference was more than two goals it was Poland who took the last WFC 2016 spot.

In the first match of the final day Sweden met France. As Sweden had already secured their first place and France was on 6th place, this match did not affect the standings. Sweden won the match 19-0 and have an impressive overall goal difference 106-7.

Best players
Sweden: Mattias Wallgren
Slovakia: Boris Halperin

Wallgren played his 100th game in the national team. Only one other Swedish male player, Peter Fischerström, has played over 100 internationals. He ended his career with 106 games played.

Hear Wallgren´s and Manaure Russo-Mendoza´s thoughts after the game:

The second game decided the second placed team in the WFCQ EUR1 group and direct WFC qualifier. As all other EUR groups had already been played, it was also clear that the goal difference would be decisive for the losing team. A two goal difference or less in this match, would secure a spot in the WFC 2016 as one of the best third placed teams.

The game was really entertaining with both teams fighting for the win. Russia scored the first goal, but Slovakia was leading 2-1 after the first period. Slovakia dominated the second period and could increase the lead to 4-1 and it looked bad for Russia. Russia played a strong third period, but could not get closer than 4-7 meaning that  for the first time ever, Russia will not play in the Men´s WFC.

In the last match Iceland and Belgium played for the 4th place in the EUR1 group. Belgium seemed to be the team that had more energy left. Iceland did not give up without a fight, but Belgium took the 4th place with a 10-4 victory.
