WFCQ 2016 EUR1: Day 1 – 03.02.2016

Floorball history was made today in the World Floorball Championships Qualification Europe 1 as team Iceland played their first ever WFC match.

It was also the first time in history that the Sweden´s men´s team played in the WFC Qualifications. The reigning champion started thei journey towards Latvia with a convincing 22-0 victory against Belgium. Jonathan Paulsson earned a shutout by stopping just four shots. Sweden´s top scorer in the match was Andreas Dahlqvist, who played his first national team match. He scored a total of six goals.

The second game Iceland made their first ever World Floorball Championships appearance when they met Russia.

Russia´s strong start made a big difference in the game as Russia led by 6-0 after 20 minutes. The newcomers also had scoring chances and improved throughout the game. In the second period Andreas Stefansson scored the first ever goal in a WFC context for team Iceland. The final score was still 12-6 to Russia. Russia´s Nikita Bryn scored 4+0 and was the most effective player.

In th third and final match of day one the home team Slovakia faced France. The game was quite tight in the beginning when Slovakia led by 5-3 after the first period. But Slovakia did not disappoint their home crowd  and scored five goals in the second period, so the match was settled. Slovakia´s Martin Kubovic scored 4+1.
