Djurgårdens IF wins the second game — 03.10.2014

Djurgårdens IF won its second game of the tournament against SC Vitkovice 9:2. The Swedish team qualifies for the semi-finals in the top spot in Group A.

After the 12:2 win over Zug United on Tuesday, Djurgårdens IF wanted to defend their lead in the standings of Women group A against Vitkovice. And the Swedish team got off to a dream start - in the second minute Matilda Sjödin opened the score, steering a loose ball into the goal. Only a couple of minutes later Emelie Lindström extended the lead to 2:0 with a powerplay goal.

While Djurgårdens IF played its well-known powerful and dynamic floorball, Vitkovice waited cleverly for potential counterattacks. This resulted in a goal of Hana Sladeckova which tightened the Swedish lead to 2:1, but another goal for Emelie Lindström, meant the scoreboard showed a 3:1 lead for the Swedish champions at the first break.

Djurgårdens IF dominated the game

The second period began with another big bang of Lars Jedheim’s Djurgårdens IF; Ranja Varli scored after nine seconds. It was the same player who extended the lead to 5:1 only four minutes later. With three more goals, two of them resulting from tremendous combinations, the Swedish champions highlighted, impressively, their role as a tournament favourite.

In the third period, the first goal was quite long in coming, and surprisingly it was Vitkovice’s Denisa Ferencikova who scored a shorthanded goal. However, even though Djurgårdens IF only scored one more time in the last period of the game, the Swedish team celebrated a clear-cut 9:2 win against SC Vitkovice. Thanks to that well-deserved victory, Sweden’s Djurgårdens IF won Group A and qualified for the first semi-final which takes place Saturday 10:00 am.
